Gray iron, or grey cast iron, is a type of cast iron that has a graphitic microstructure. It is named after the gray color of the fracture it forms, which is due to the presence of graphite. It is the most common cast iron and the most widely used cast material based on weight. It is used for housings where the stiffness of the component is more important than its tensile strength, such as dual-phase cast iron was observed. 2.3. Press-in Method The initiation of cracks in Ni–Mo M/B dual-phase grey cast iron was studied by pressing round head into the corro-sive surface. Cracks would initiate and extend in some site of M/B grey cast iron along with …

Metallurgy of gray cast iron IASJ. Cast iron with spheroidal and vermicular graphite inclusions exhibit difficult machining because wear-reducing manganese sulphide layer is not formed, as in machining of grey cast iron. In addition, an essential reduction of tool life is observed when Ti is added as alloying element, due to an increase in abrasive wear of the tool., Investigating the effects of microstructure on the wear mechanisms in lamellar cast irons via microscratch tests Mohammed Mendasa,n, Stéphane Benayounb a Rheology Mechanics Laboratory, Hassiba Benbouali University of Chlef, BP 151 Hay Essalem, Chlef 02000, Algeria b Laboratory of Tribology and Dynamic of Systems (LTDS), Central School of Lyon, 36 Avenue Guy de Collongue, ….

RubleAndrew Cast Iron. Gray iron, or grey cast iron, is a type of cast iron that has a graphitic microstructure. It is named after the gray color of the fracture it forms, which is due to the presence of graphite. It is the most common cast iron and the most widely used cast material based on weight. It is used for housings where the stiffness of the component is more important than its tensile strength, such as cast iron and ordinary cast iron. This showed that an increase in the level of alloying elements in cast iron gave a higher level of hardness. However, the tensile strength of alloyed semi-solid cast iron did not exceed that of grey iron, for every composition, as a result of the characteristic microstructure produced by semi-solid processing.

In the family of cast iron, in terms of production and application, the grey iron occupies the privilege position. The various types of grey iron are most commonly designated by a class number which indicates their minimum tensile strength requirement. For example, a class 30 requires
grey cast iron (that is, Grades FG 300, FG 350 and FG 400) present special difficulties for section 10 mmand thinner. For the benefit ofthe purchaser, typical properties of grey cast iron have been added in Annex C. Information to be supplied by the purchaser while ordering grey iron castings according to this specification is given in Annex D. gy from flake-like to vermicular-like or spherical-like. Different functional alloy cast irons, such as grey cast iron, spherical cast iron, vermicular cast iron, and ductile cast iron, can be obtained by adding different alloying elements [13]-[17]. The effect of alloying element on the wear characteristic of grey cast iron has also been con-

The differences in the microstructure were due to the difference in heat treatment, process of cooling and additives present. Grey cast iron brings a low tensile strength that makes it a poor shock resistor. Also, grey cast iron can be too brittle for some applications and cause failure [6]. Grey cast iron is very bad of form iron is lustrous, silvery, soft, and ductile. However, pure iron is a poor engineering material, generally not as strong as most plastics. Cast irons are based on the Fe-C system, and the solid-state transformations on which cast iron heat treatments are based are similar to those applied to steels. Heat Treatment of Cast Irons
